Days 31 and 32 Airlie Beach Reef Festival (and a bit of Day 33)

Hullo all once again,

The weather over the last 2 days has been perfect, a little cool in the mornings, mid to high 20 during the day.  But spare a thought for us tomorrow, only going to get to 24 and there is a chance of rain, gee life is tough.

Yesterday and today were the main days of the Airlie Beach Reef Festival.  Things kicked off last night with a night market and a fireworks display.  Of course, we went along.  We started with a quick tour of a small side show alley and resisted the temptation to buy a dagwood dog and chips.  We then had a look at the night market.  It was also on the small side and what was on offer didn't really do much for us.  Then is was a matter of waiting for the fireworks.  I wanted to try my hand at some firework photography so that meant selecting our position early.  As it turned out I didn't quite predict the direction in which the fireworks would explode.  This meant I had to turn the camera on its tripod and when I did so I found that I was photographing spectators' heads and Ipods as well as the fireworks.  Thanks to the wonders of modern digital cameras, however, I was able to do a bit of careful cropping and got some reasonable pictures.  I'll let you be the judge.

Today (really it was yesterday because I am writing this on Sunday, 3 August) we went into Airlie Beach to buy some herbs for our lamb curry and discovered that there was another market in progress.  This was much bigger than last night's and much better.  And it was packed.  There was any amount of stalls selling all kinds of things including good quality arts and crafts, a great deal of summer clothing and beach wear and fresh fruit and vegetables.  Needless to say, this is where we bought our herbs.

The highlight of this second day of the Reef Festival was the street parade through the main street of Airlie Beach.  It was not exactly your Moomba or Mardi Gras street parade.  It was more a charming and friendly display of the local businesses and community organisations.  It was obvious that the participants were enjoying themselves and we, the spectators, certainly were.

Today, Sunday, we think is going to be a quiet and restful day.  We do not have anything planned.  We may go for a stroll along the beach, but given that the beach is two kms away, we may just sit around the caravan park.  We may also go up to the local regional shopping centre because I need to get some O rings to fix a dripping water connector.  I'll let you know what we end up doing.

Weather wise, it was a bit cooler early this morning, so cool, in fact, that I was seriously considering putting on a light fleece.  But we toughed it out and now it is quite pleasant with a cool breeze wafting in under the awning as I write this.  It was meant to be windy today, but I don't what has happened to that.  Perhaps it will start to blow this afternoon.  Anyway, time to go.  Hope you like these photos
