The good news is that we survived the night. It rained like crazy all yesterday afternoon and most of last night. I think it finally eased off to heavy showers at about 3.00 am. We learned this morning that we had received 101 mm of rain in 24 hours. That's about 4 inches in the old money. In anyone's language that is a lot of rain. That means that in the time since we left Bargara Beach, about 12 days ago, we have experienced a total rainfall of 11 inches. To give you some idea of the heaviness of that rainfall, Canberra's rainfall for 12 months is a little over 30 inches.
There are a few roads closed, due to flooding, around the area but nothing too servere. We heard the the local SES attended about 100 calls during the night and the severe storm water runoff put a heavy strain on the Ballina sewage system, but again, without any great harm.
We did sustain a small leak in the caravan. At about dinner time, we noticed that a small amount of water had entered via the handle that winds up the TV antenna. Although the handle is situated over Bev's bed, the leak didn't do any damage, just wet some of her clothes and they were easily dried. We think the leak was caused by the very heavy rainfall and the strong winds that were driving it.
I must have been more tired than I thought last night because Bev woke me at 9.40 this morning. I think I was due for a sleep-in.
We haven't done much today. The weather has improved dramatically although the wind has got even stronger. We were able to get out of the van and drive into Lennox Head in the sunshine. We stayed long enough to have a coffee at yet another very good cafe. I have to say that I am becoming more impressed with Lennox Head the longer we stay here. Although it is a very small place as beach resorts go, it has a good number of inviting eateries and attractive shops. We also notice that the people in the cafes and shops are not all "grey nomads" like us, far from it. We see many young mothers with babies, as well as more well-to-do middle aged people. However, I have noticed that there are not many teenagers around. Maybe that is simply a reflection of the fact that we seem to always visit Lennox Head during school hours.
We have spent the rest of the afternoon just having a rest, playing with our computer and Ipad and doing a bit of reading. That's fine, we are on holidays after all, and are meant to be having a rest.
Tomorrow, we are going up to Brunswick Heads to have a look around and to join our friends, the Millers, for lunch. The forecast is good so it should be an enjoyable trip.
Glad to hear you weren't washed away!!!
