Hello everyone,
Today we travelled south from Mackay to Rockhampton and it was a dream drive. 323 kms through quite diverse scenery. For about an hour out of Mackay we travelled through hilly, scrub country interspersed with flat cane country. Further south, the cane fields were replaced with flat grazing lands. However, there was not too much to be seen in the way of cattle. Perhaps the cattle had been turned off or else the Queensland drought is beginning to affect these coastal pastures.
Unlike yesterday, there was not a great deal of traffic on the road, although towards the end of the trip, I did pull over to let a collection of B double trucks to pass. Overall, the road was in good condition but with a few bumpy bits. There is even one section where the speed limit goes up to 110 kph. We came across only a few instances of minor road works, not enough to slow us down much.
As I said, we travelled 323 kms. We did this in a bit over 4 hours averaging 76 kms per hour. To achieve this average, we travelled, for the most part, under cruise control set at 93 kms per hour. Fuel consumption was 12.7 litres per hundred kms
We are staying at the Big 4 Discovery Parks Caravan Park. As was the case in Mackay, it is not pet friendly. It is quite a big park on the northern side of Rockhampton about 6 kms from the city centre. Caravan sites are quite roomy and we did not have any difficulty in reversing the van into our site. As far as we can see, most sites have concrete slabs.
Through a lot of good luck rather than good planning, we were able to catch up with Leonie, one of Bev's bridesmaids and her husband, Alan. Bev has had only brief opportunities to spend any time with Leonie over the last couple of years, so she got a big thrill out of being able to sit and chat for a couple of hours as we did until the evening got too chilly. They are staying in this caravan park until Sunday so we intend to spend some more time with them tomorrow, probably having a quick look at Rockhampton.
Sorry, no photos today but hopefully I will have some tomorrow or the day after.
