Day 30 Townsville to Airlie Beach

We had a good travelling day today.  We had no trouble getting out of Townsville, one of the benefits of staying at a caravan park on the edge of the city.  The trip was pretty uneventful.  Mainly flat savannah country interspersed with sugar cane country.  This is really BIG cane country, especially around the towns of Ayr and Bowen where the cane fields stretch as far as the eye can see.

The road was good and the only road works of any significance were taking place on the Burdekin River Bridge, possibly the longest river bridge I have crossed in Australia.  In places the traffic was very busy and the passing lanes were somewhat scarce.  But there were also long stretches where we could travel under cruise control without any difficulty.

Airlie Beach is a bit of surprise.  I was expecting a resort like Mission Beach, plenty of room and not all that crowded.  Instead, it is quite a big place squeezed between the coastal mountains and the sea.  And it is really busy, cars and people everywhere.  The fact the the annual Whitsunday Reef Festival starts tomorrow may have something to do with it.

We found the Big 4 Airlie Cove Resort and caravan park without any trouble.  It lives up to its Big 4 brand.  Very good amenities and plenty of them.  A very nice pool and a children's play area that is going to be very attractive when it is finished.  It is a big park with a good mix of slab and grass sites.  It is also very well shaded.  It is also welcomes pets, but ask first about the conditions.  The only downside is that the sites are a bit on the snug side.

The only problem occurred just before dinner when I cracked my head on the doorway as I was entering the van.  I now have a big white bandage on my head covering up a twenty cent size scalping.

We didn't go into the town this afternoon so no photos of Airlie Beach today.  But here are some of the van park.  I have also put in a couple of a free camp area that we came across about 43 kms north of Bowen.  As free camp areas go, it was very attractive.  It has a good set of toilets but no showers.  It also next to a service station and shop and comes equipped with several shaded picnic tables and chairs that are in good repair.

About the research task in the last post; please disregard the clue, I got it wrong.

  2. Oh, and the Tigers had a very ugly win against G.W.S today, with more gratuitous violence. Hardwick needs to put a stop to it, instead of calling it "good hard play",as he did last week. It's not. It's cowardly thuggery. I've had me say on the Richmond site! I'm sure they'll listen - Not!!
