Day 12 Winton to Hughenden

Well, we made to Hughenden on the Kennedy Developmental Road.  Actually, it wasn't too bad at all.

Taken overall, the road is good with some very good stretches and some that are not so good.

The first half from Winton was rather ordinary with a fair bit of roadworks in the 30 or so kilometres before Corfield. This required detouring onto compacted black soil for stretches ranging from a couple of hundred metres to 2 or more kilometres and travelling at no more that 40 kph.  Thankfully, it was Sunday and they were not working and watering down the detours otherwise the car and van would have been covered in black mud.  The second half was much better.

We obeyed the road signs and travelled in the centre of the road where safe to do.  However, the road is wide enough to allow left hand travel most of the time.  You need to watch your speed especially when traversing the floodways.  These can dip quite severely and the van doesn't like it.  It took us 3 hours to cover the distance at an average of 70 kph which wasn't too bad.  There was very little traffic perhaps only 3 or 4 heavy vehicles.

Hughenden is a tiny place and, being Sunday, was closed, except for the pub that is.  So, after we set up at the caravan park, we adjourned there for a couple of very cold and very welcome beers and some lunch.

The caravan park is small but very nice.  The roads are all sealed as are the sites with raised grass areas for awnings and annexes.  The amenities are spic and span with plentiful hot water which does not smell of hydrogen sulphide.  The park extends a conditional welcome to pets which must be leashed at all times.

  1. Sounds like you're having fun! What are the locals like in the tiny towns, are they happy to have visitors? Ok, I've been dutifully completing my research tasks and now I have one for you! At your next town tell me about the traditional custodians! Safe travels xx
