Day 53 Darwin

11 July

Today we discovered an absolute little gem of a place called Cullen Bay.  Cullen Bay is not all that far from the city centre and sits between Darwin Harbour and Fannie Bay.

It is full of fashionable apartment buildings and fashionable people who do very fashionable things such as brunch at the cafes overlooking the marina.  When looking at the marina and the boats that it contains, it is very obvious that Cullen Bay is where the rich come to play and pay.

The bay is surrounded by apartment buildings and very expensive houses and is lined on one side by a boardwalk containing several attractive eateries and coffee shops.  If you ever come to Cullen Bay, be sure to visit the Boathouse even if it is only for coffee.  Its ambiance is particularly inviting, overlooking, as it does, the Bay and its surroundings.  There is a real buzz about the place as the locals drop in for their saturday morning lattes and late breakfasts.  The coffee here is seriously good and best of all it is served in bowls!  It is really my kind of place.

The one thing I did notice about Cullen Bay was a relative lack of the boutique clothing shops and book stores that are usually found in these kinds of settings.

After Cullen Bay we called in at Fannie Bay.  This is another seaside residential area with some very expensive-looking housing.  Its main claim to fame, apart from having spectacular views over Darwin Harbour, is the Fannie Bay Gaol and being the place where the first aeroplane flight from England to Australia first touched down in 1919.

After leaving Fannie Bay we took a drive through Nightcliff, a not so up-market suburb and then back to the caravan park at Palmerson.  We have discovered that it is very easy to find our way around Darwin.  It is blessed with a very good network of superb arterial roads with relatively little traffic.

As I am writing this, I am beginning to realise that it is beginning to get quite warm.  So, I think it is time for a swim.  Here are some more photos of Cullen Bay and Darwin Harbour.
