Day 4 Swan Hill to Mildura

Saturday, 23 May

Another easy towing day today.  It was a day of variations.  The landscape varied between flat to slightly undulating country.  The land use varied from orchards, vineyards, some sheep grazing to state forest.  The vegetation varied from river red gums to Mallee scrub with some salt bush thrown in for good measure.  The road had long, straight sections interspersed with sweeping curves.  And over and under all this was the big blue skies and rich red earth of north western Victoria.

The weather was kind to us again.  I didn't note the temperature when we set out but it was still only 8    degrees at 9.30.  On the other hand, there was very little wind.  Once again, we were able to sit in the sun outside the 'van for a time this afternoon.  We expect to have another fine day tomorrow but soon we have to accept some rain.

We took some time out at Robinvale for morning tea.  This is a very compact and tidy little place with a very nice and prosperous-looking main street.

Once we left Robinvale, our GPS route took us across the Murray River to link up with the Sturt Highway.  Here a very strange thing happened.  The route took us through a few zig zags before we joined up with the highway.  At this point my sense of direction told me that we were heading in the opposite direction to the one we should have been following.  The position of the sun told me that we were heading west, as did the GPS compass.  Despite this, I could not shake the feeling that we were headed in the wrong direction.  It was only after I saw a sign telling me where the Murray River was that things clicked into place.  Just as well I was  not exploring this country in the 19th century.  I don't think I would have been very successful!

We got into Mildura at about 12.30 and checked into the Deakin Big 4 caravan park.  This is a relatively small park with caravan sites that are rather on the snug side.  However, the very helpful staff are only too happy to help the customers park even if it means getting into the car and parking the van themselves.  Not that we had to resort to such help.  We had a drive through site that made the job relatively easy.

Once we got set up we went across the road to do some shopping at a large shopping mall.  That was about it for the day.  Tomorrow we will do some sight seeing.

And now for some good news.  I have solved my photo problem.  I can now add photos to the blog.
