Day 1 Canberra to Holbrook

Wednesday, 20 May

Well, we are away.  The trip has finally started.

We drove out of the driveway at 10.05 this morning, just 5 minutes late.  I wonder if we can make that up over the next 104 days!!

We had a very uneventful journey down the Hume Highway to Holbrook.  There was hardly any traffic and the weather was good except for when we arrived when, of course, it poured with rain.  We took care to enjoy the rolling green hills of southern New South Wales, dotted, as they were, with white sheep and black cattle.  We are not going to see a lot of that kind of scenery after the next few days.

Naturally, we called in at the Dog on the Tucker Box at Gundagai. You can't travel on this road without stopping here for a break.  This time we were pleasantly surprised to bump in to John and Carol Burnett from Canberra.  They were on their way to Victoria for a short break.  It is amazing how small this world can be.

From Gundagai to Holbrook is a relatively short hop of about 120 kms.  We made it in good time and checked into the caravan park at 2.30.

The highlight of this leg of the trip was catching up with Brian and Judy Black and we did that right here in the caravan park.  They are on their way back to Canberra after having spent 8 weeks travelling over the Nullarbor Plain to Western Australia and then back again via the Flinders Ranges and Broken Hill.

We spent the rest of the afternoon doing a great deal of talking and swapping travel stories.  That continued over dinner and a nice bottle of wine at the Holbrook Soldiers Club.  Unfortunately, all this talking and catching up got in the way of any photography.  However, Bev did manage to take some of the Hume Highway just north of Albury.  The one below is the best of them and is of the two south-bound lanes.  As you see there was  not a lot of traffic around at the time.
