Day 32 Alice Springs

20 June

We woke to a very sunny but very cold day today.  2 degrees this morning and I don't think it got above 16 or 17 in the sun all day.

We spent the morning wandering through the shopping precinct.  We found a very pleasant aboriginal art gallery and spent an enjoyable hour or so looking at some beautiful paintings at prices we could not possibly afford.  We came across a large painting going for a snip at $25,000 but we resisted the opportunity to buy this or anything else.

After that we strolled down Todd Mall, a very attractive pedestrian mall shaded by fine old red river gums.  Given the very low temperature, we were careful to walk on the sunny side of the street.  We also spent some time in the visitor centre working out a short itinerary of places to visit and things to do while we are in Alice Springs.

The highlight of the morning happened when we had to go to the loo.  When we got there we found a sign telling us that a visit would cost us 50 cents.  I have never had to pay to go the toilet anywhere in our travels around Australia.  Mind you, the locals treated the sign in true Australian fashion; they ignored it and just walked in.

This afternoon we visited the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum.  We signed up for the tour which consisted mainly of an audio-visual presentation featuring a hologram of John Flynn, the founder of the service, and we were very glad we did. We found it very well produced and very informative.

Tomorrow, we are going to head out west along the Namatjira Drive hopefully getting as far as Ormiston Gorge and seeing all the other sites on the way.

Sorry about today's lack of photos.  I didn't take my camera on this morning's shopping expedition and this afternoon did not provide any photo opportunities.
