15 June
After yesterday's exertions, we decided to have a restful day today.
We spent a very pleasant morning, sitting in the sun waiting for the washing to dry. We also enjoyed watching the other caravanners packing up and leaving and still other caravanners arriving and setting up. So much more enjoyable when you are not doing it yourself.
About midday we drove the short distance to Kathleen Springs to do the Kathleen Springs walk. This is a very gentle 2 km return walk on a paved path along the bottom of a low-walled gorge. It really was a walk for grandparents.
While the walls of the gorge were much lower than those of King's Canyon, they were very impressive nevertheless. They were made of same sandstone as those of the Canyon, with dramatic orange cliffs rising against the blue of the sky.
The gorge and its permanent waterhole, has been used for tens of thousands of years by the local indigenous people as a place to catch game especially in bad years when the food sources in the surrounding country fail for lack of water.
In more recent years it has been used for cattle grazing and you can still see the remains of stockyards, fences and water troughs.
Without too much effort we reached the waterhole at the end of the path and at the head of the gorge. We were the only ones there and we enjoyed the peace and serenity of the place.
Right now, I am sitting outside the bar accessing the wifi hotspot and as I am writing this, I am listening to some really great music. So I think I am going to get Bev, who is presently sitting outside the caravan reading a good book, and come back and enjoy a glass of wine or two before dinner.
Looking forward to talking to you tomorrow.
Here are some photos of the walk into Kathleen Springs and back.
